After the 2nd Gulf war there was a massive Shia uprising in Iraq to over throw the regime of Saddam Hussain. For a period of almost two weeks Shias had full control of Southern Iraq and were poised to take over Baghdad. The success of the Shia uprising sent alarm bells ringing in Washington which feared an Iranian style of anti-American government in Iraq. At the time of the Shia uprising America was at war with Saddam Hussain but it still did not allow the Shia uprising to be successful as it considered Saddam to be better of the two evils. The Iraqi Shias were never anti-American, there main enemy was the regime of Saddam Hussain which had terrorized the Shia population for over three decades. But due to Iran’s anti-American slogans, Shias all over the world are seen as enemies of the West and America. As a consequence the Shia uprising in Iraq failed and resulted in the massacre of around half a million Shias and displacement of some two million Shias by the forces of Saddam Hussain. These Shias are still living in misery in the refugee camps at the Iran-Iraq border.

17 Januari 1991
Op de hogeschool waren overal televisieschermen aangebracht die onophoudelijk op CNN stonden. We waren in die tijden al wel wat gewend: de Muur, icoon van het Koude Oorlog-tijdperk waarin wij opgroeiden, was amper twee jaar eerder gevallen. Ik zat op kot in de Rodestraat in Antwerpen en had een kleine zwart-wit-televisie op mijn kot, zo een met een al jaren ontbrekende antenne waardoor je nog nauwelijks TV1 kon bekijken tenzij je op de juiste plaats ging zitten. We hadden afgesproken dat ze me zou wakker maken als de oorlog begon. Weinig eten in huis gisteren dus werd het wat improviseren. Nu wilde ik eens verse pizza's maken. Wat bleek: dat is zó eenvoudig! Kinderspel gewoonweg. Ik kan me wel voor het hoofd slaan dat ik het nog nooit eerder uitprobeerde.
Men neme (voor 2 grote pizza's):
- 250 gram (gezeefde) witte bloem,
- 6 eetlepels olijfolie,
- een half zakje gedroogde gist en
- 100 milliliter lauw water.
Meng alles goed door en kneed tot je een niet-plakkende deegbol hebt. Laat die - op een warme plaats - een half uurtje rusten onder een natte vaatdoek.
Rol de helft van het deeg op een met bloem bestoven werkvlak uit. Voilà een pizzabodem. Neem een taarvorm, bestrijk die met wat olijfolie en leg er de pizzabodem in.
Maak een tomatensaus: bv. een blik tomatenblokjes + 1/2 gesnipperde ui + een paar teentjes geperste look. Strijk de saus dun uit over de pizzabodem. Werk af met schijfjes mozzarella, geraspte kaas (gruyère, emmenthal, chester, parmesan, wat je ook maar in de ijskast hebt), olijven, paprikareepjes, tonijn, ananas, whatever comes to mind, quoi.
Zet de pizza in een zo heet mogelijke oven, laat 10 minuutjes bakken en voilà: heerlijke, verse pizza.

Latvian photographer Ralf Vulis has created an entire book using a single chair and one hundred different girls from his hometown of Riga who agreed to pose nude for him. Coalition of the willing
Critics say a war coalition cannot be judged simply by the number of flags Washington can muster to its cause. In the Gulf War, the United States was backed on the ground by armour and helicopter divisions from Britain and France, plus warships and planes from all its European allies. There were frontline forces from Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states who fought, flew combat missions and took casualties. All told, allies supplied 254,000 troops. They lost 92 dead in action and 318 wounded, compared with 148 dead and 458 wounded Americans.

Ik ben niet tegen het bestaan van de staat Israël. Ik heb niets tegen joden. Of moslims. Of boeddhisten. Maar ik heb het wel moeilijk met het hanteren van dubbele maten en gewichten. Toen - tijdens het apartheidsregime in Zuid-Afrika - toenmalige vrienden van me argumenteerden dat zélfs met (en misschien dankzij) de apartheid de zwarten in Zuid-Afrika het beduidend beter hadden dat de zwarten in de rest van het continent, was mijn antwoord steeds "Maar ze zijn niet vrij". Toen de muur nog niet gevallen was en toenmalige vrienden van me argumenteerden dat het in communistische delen van de wereld er nog niet zo slecht aan toe ging (lage werkloosheid, goede gezondheidszorg, ...), was mijn antwoord steeds "Maar ze zijn niet vrij". Als de Verenigde Staten aan de ene kant strikte navolging van VN-resoluties eist, zelfs op basis van bewijzen die of vervalst of onbestaande zijn, dan moet dat maar meteen voor àlle VN-resoluties. Ook voor die paar tientallen die nu al jarenlang door Israël met de voeten worden getreden. Nogmaals, ik vind dat Israël bestaansrecht heeft en dat de voorbije eeuwen de joden veel onrecht is aangedaan. Maar ook de Palestijnen hebben recht op een eigen staat. Het staatsterrorisme dat door Israël uitgeoefend wordt, en door de VS gedoogd, is amoreel en zinloos. Vrede in het Midden-Oosten zal beginnen met wederzijds respect van de internationale rechtsregels en het wederzijds erkennen van het bestaansrecht van Israël (door de moslims) en een onafhankelijke Palestijnse staat (door de Israëlis).

Sinds medio januari van 2003 is het dodental van de voorbije 28 maanden van het Israelisch-Palestijnse conflict opgelopen tot meer dan 2795, het aantal mensen dat in de WTC-aanslagen het leven liet. Twee maten, twee gewichten
To cap it all, Bush's speech last week made no mention of Israel's UN-dictated obligations to withdraw. Far from it. Instead Bush indicated that the US has relaxed its objections to the continuing expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied territories.
Speaking the very next day, Sharon made it clear what that meant. It meant not only the "natural growth" of existing settlements. It also now meant their active development.
Yet amid this great oppression and injustice, it is not Israel but the Palestinian Authority, condemned by Sharon and the US for failing to curb violence, ostracised by Bush, and still handicapped by last summer's systematic Israeli destruction of its infrastructure and administrative centres, that is expected to change its ways as a prior condition for any new negotiations.
Bush said in his speech that he has a "personal commitment" to a Palestinian state. But he has said much the same before. Nor does this first use of the word "personal" make it any more likely to happen. Bush is not good at keeping promises - as America's voters, like the Afghans, are beginning to discover.

After the 2nd Gulf war there was a massive Shia uprising in Iraq to over throw the regime of Saddam Hussain. For a period of almost two weeks Shias had full control of Southern Iraq and were poised to take over Baghdad. The success of the Shia uprising sent alarm bells ringing in Washington which feared an Iranian style of anti-American government in Iraq. At the time of the Shia uprising America was at war with Saddam Hussain but it still did not allow the Shia uprising to be successful as it considered Saddam to be better of the two evils. The Iraqi Shias were never anti-American, there main enemy was the regime of Saddam Hussain which had terrorized the Shia population for over three decades. But due to Iran’s anti-American slogans, Shias all over the world are seen as enemies of the West and America. As a consequence the Shia uprising in Iraq failed and resulted in the massacre of around half a million Shias and displacement of some two million Shias by the forces of Saddam Hussain. These Shias are still living in misery in the refugee camps at the Iran-Iraq border.

Op de hogeschool waren overal televisieschermen aangebracht die onophoudelijk op CNN stonden. We waren in die tijden al wel wat gewend: de Muur, icoon van het Koude Oorlog-tijdperk waarin wij opgroeiden, was amper twee jaar eerder gevallen. Ik zat op kot in de Rodestraat in Antwerpen en had een kleine zwart-wit-televisie op mijn kot, zo een met een al jaren ontbrekende antenne waardoor je nog nauwelijks TV1 kon bekijken tenzij je op de juiste plaats ging zitten. We hadden afgesproken dat ze me zou wakker maken als de oorlog begon. Heel vroeg 's ochtends klopte ze op mijn deur en keken we samen, zij in kamerjas en ik in mijn boxershort, naar de eerste beelden van een extra journaal.

Freedom Pizza
Weinig eten in huis gisteren dus werd het wat improviseren. Nu wilde ik eens verse pizza's maken. Wat bleek: dat is zó eenvoudig! Kinderspel gewoonweg. Ik kan me wel voor het hoofd slaan dat ik het nog nooit eerder uitprobeerde.
Men neme (voor 2 grote pizza's):
- 250 gram (gezeefde) witte bloem,
- 6 eetlepels olijfolie,
- een half zakje gedroogde gist en
- 100 milliliter lauw water.
Meng alles goed door en kneed tot je een niet-plakkende deegbol hebt. Laat die - op een warme plaats - een half uurtje rusten onder een natte vaatdoek.
Rol de helft van het deeg op een met bloem bestoven werkvlak uit. Voilà een pizzabodem. Neem een taarvorm, bestrijk die met wat olijfolie en leg er de pizzabodem in.
Maak een tomatensaus: bv. een blik tomatenblokjes + 1/2 gesnipperde ui + een paar teentjes geperste look. Strijk de saus dun uit over de pizzabodem. Werk af met schijfjes mozzarella, geraspte kaas (gruyère, emmenthal, chester, parmesan, wat je ook maar in de ijskast hebt), olijven, paprikareepjes, tonijn, ananas, whatever comes to mind, quoi.
Zet de pizza in een zo heet mogelijke oven, laat 10 minuutjes bakken en voilà: heerlijke, verse pizza.

Critics say a war coalition cannot be judged simply by the number of flags Washington can muster to its cause. In the Gulf War, the United States was backed on the ground by armour and helicopter divisions from Britain and France, plus warships and planes from all its European allies. There were frontline forces from Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states who fought, flew combat missions and took casualties. All told, allies supplied 254,000 troops. They lost 92 dead in action and 318 wounded, compared with 148 dead and 458 wounded Americans.

Toen de muur nog niet gevallen was en toenmalige vrienden van me argumenteerden dat het in communistische delen van de wereld er nog niet zo slecht aan toe ging (lage werkloosheid, goede gezondheidszorg, ...), was mijn antwoord steeds "Maar ze zijn niet vrij". Als de Verenigde Staten aan de ene kant strikte navolging van VN-resoluties eist, zelfs op basis van bewijzen die of vervalst of onbestaande zijn, dan moet dat maar meteen voor àlle VN-resoluties. Ook voor die paar tientallen die nu al jarenlang door Israël met de voeten worden getreden. Nogmaals, ik vind dat Israël bestaansrecht heeft en dat de voorbije eeuwen de joden veel onrecht is aangedaan. Maar ook de Palestijnen hebben recht op een eigen staat. Het staatsterrorisme dat door Israël uitgeoefend wordt, en door de VS gedoogd, is amoreel en zinloos. Vrede in het Midden-Oosten zal beginnen met wederzijds respect van de internationale rechtsregels en het wederzijds erkennen van het bestaansrecht van Israël (door de moslims) en een onafhankelijke Palestijnse staat (door de Israëlis).

Twee maten, twee gewichten
To cap it all, Bush's speech last week made no mention of Israel's UN-dictated obligations to withdraw. Far from it. Instead Bush indicated that the US has relaxed its objections to the continuing expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied territories.
Speaking the very next day, Sharon made it clear what that meant. It meant not only the "natural growth" of existing settlements. It also now meant their active development.
Yet amid this great oppression and injustice, it is not Israel but the Palestinian Authority, condemned by Sharon and the US for failing to curb violence, ostracised by Bush, and still handicapped by last summer's systematic Israeli destruction of its infrastructure and administrative centres, that is expected to change its ways as a prior condition for any new negotiations.
Bush said in his speech that he has a "personal commitment" to a Palestinian state. But he has said much the same before. Nor does this first use of the word "personal" make it any more likely to happen. Bush is not good at keeping promises - as America's voters, like the Afghans, are beginning to discover.
